Description

Reporting to artworxLA’s Creative Youth Development Manager, the Marketing Internship will focus on arts nonprofit brand strategy, with an emphasis on creative storytelling and design. The internship will offer deep insight into artworxLA's mission, teaching philosophy, and creative methodologies.

The main project for the internship will be a Brand Guide that the intern proposes artworxLA use when communicating with youth about its programs and other offerings. Learning from a team of professional mentors-- including designers, copywriters, and social media managers--the Intern will:

  • collaborate with a team to develop a brand manifesto that articulates that artworxLA does, what makes it unique, who it serves, and why it exists within the arts and culture ecosystem
  • create mood boards to explore a youth-focused aesthetic and define the visual elements that share artworxLA's storytelling
  • determine a palette of 3-6 brand colors to define youth programs and establish visual consistency across communications
  • illustrate a series of three original graphics in their personal style for programs and arts advocacy campaigns
  • propose new wordmark logo designs for individual programs that complement artworxLA's existing logo
  • collaborate on writing geared towards a youth audience for a scripted video or social media content.

This internship will strengthen design and storytelling skills while providing a hands-on experience aligning creative direction with arts education advocacy.

Additional Duties

The intern will participate in regular check-ins with supervisors that connect day-to-day tasks to big-picture concepts, address questions, clarify any confusion, and support their individual growth. Ongoing creative review sessions will help build comfort in receiving feedback from staff and mentors. Communications team check-ins will also help the intern understand how planning, messaging, and production workflows operate within a nonprofit arts organization.

Interns will participate in field trips to Special Group's headquarters (with transportation provided by Special/artworxLA via HopSkipDrive), where they will meet creative professionals from Special's team and clients, including Uber, Hands, Fox Sports, Apple, Nike, and local production studios. These experiences will provide a well-rounded understanding of the creative and logistical components of marketing beyond a nonprofit arts perspective.
